Disney Typhoon Lagoon Water Park Pic

Typhoon Lagoon opened to the public on Jun 1, 1989, billed as having the world’s largest outdoor wave pool. Like many other Walt Disney World attractions, it has a “made up” theme. According to legend, Typhoon Lagoon was once a beautiful tropical resort, until a furious storm roared through the area, destroying everything in its path. A fleet of boats from the nearby fishing village were picked up by the winds and left strewn about like toys. One amazing piece of damage was a shrimp boat that landed atop the opening of Mt. Mayday, the community’s scenic volcano.

After the storm the landscape was changed forever, leaving behind roaring rapids, twisting tides, gushing waterways and lazy rivers. The locals soon realized they had a possible tourist attraction, so they built slides and bridges and the largest wave pool in North America, and Typhoon Lagoon Water Park was born.

Attractions at Typhoon Lagoon

  • Typhoon Lagoon - The Typhoon Lagoon surf pool is the centerpiece of the water park, with waves up to 6 feet high crashing onto the shores of the lagoon. The waves originate at the base of Mt. Mayday and then speed along the deep outer lagoon which is enclosed on three sides by timber retaining walls that hold back the volcanic mountain slopes. The waves break just as they clear the walls, at which point the water is six feet deep.

  • Castaway Creek - Castaway Creek is the lazy river that travels around the park. The river is only 3-4 feet deep and runs on a slow current. As you float down the river on this 2,000-foot journey, you will see banana trees, palm trees, tropical birds and flowers. You will slowly drift through caves, under waterfalls and cool mists, and through tropical forests, and around all the other attractions at the park. If you choose, you can get off Castaway Creek at one of the many stops along the way.

  • Humonga Kowabunga - Three water slides await you at Humunga Kowabunga, which sends you zooming through enclosed tubes at 30 mph to a splashing surprise ending.

  • Shark Reef - One of the most dramatic attractions at Typhoon Lagoon is Shark Reef, a massive saltwater pool and manmade coral reef, where guests can snorkel among swarms of exotic marine life. For those who don’t want to get wet, there is a sunken tanker with portholes that provide stunning views of the underwater activity.

  • Storm Slides - Another set of three slides where you’ll twist and swirl through caves and tunnels, and Mayday Falls, the longest waterslide in the Park. It takes guests aboard their own personal inner tube down the side of the mountain in the shadow of the famed shrimp boat.

  • Ketchakiddie Creek - This children's area on the left side of the park is intended for the younger set. It features bubbling fountains, a few small water slides and raft rides (very small) and a shallow wading pool area. Please note that children under age 10 should be accompanied at all times by an adult throughout the park.

  • White Water Tube Rides - Another set of three slides you collect an inner tube or raft and carry it up the climb to the top of the ride with you. Keelhaul Falls, a tube ride, is the tamest of the three, and is usually the one with the shortest line. Gang Plank Falls is higher, longer and wider, which nicely accommodates the family-sized rafts that ply these waters. Mayday falls is the highest and wildest, sending you careening down a wild river.

Don't Miss - Shark Reef

A unique underwater adventure awaits you and your family as you swim in a saltwater tank filled with live sharks (which are completely harmless, by the way!) and schools of colorful tropical fish. If you don’t want to take a dip in the Shark Reef, you can go inside the sunken tanker and always observe these exotic creatures through the portholes.

A mask, snorkel and life jacket are included with the price of admission to Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon. Shark Reef lies at the far right-hand side of the water park and adjacent to Storm Slides.

Note: Shark Reef is one of the more popular attractions at Typhoon Lagoon and sometimes gets extremely crowded, so you may want to knock if off your list early in the morning.

Surf Pool

Walt Disney World’s Typhoon Lagoon has one of the world’s largest wave pools. Surf is up all day long in this ocean like swimming pool. As a huge wave comes every ninety seconds, many guests love to body surf all the way back to the white sandy shores.

This is a great area for families to swim together. The waves are a bit strong though, so make sure you prepare yourself for the massive waves. Children are more than welcome to wear life vests in the water, but there are also lifeguards on stand. Food and drinks are not permitted in the wave pool but guests can keep those near by on the shore with the rest of their belongings.

Whether you are seated at the edge of the beach and letting the waves refresh your feet, or diving underneath the waves with the rest of the crowd, you are sure to hear the shrieks of excitement each time a wave heads for shore.

Park Facts

Typhoon Lagoon is open just about all year round, although it does have a short period of closure for a month or so during the winter period for refurbishment. The park does get very crowded during the summer peak season. In the cooler months, all of the nearly 3 million gallons of water at the park are heated. The park will typically be closed for about a month during the winter - check for exact dates by calling (407) 824-4321.

The best time of the week to visit Typhoon Lagoon is generally on a weekday, towards the start of the week. Later in the week, Typhoon Lagoon tends to attract people who spend the beginning of the week at the major parks. Local residents tend to keep the park busy during the weekends.

*** What's New At Typhoon Lagoon ***

Crush n' Gusher

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., March 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- "Flash flooding" takes on a whole new meaning for Walt Disney World guests when they experience Crush 'n' Gusher, a new white-knuckle "water coaster" thrill ride that opened today at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon water park.

Crush 'n' Gusher launched with a splash Tuesday. Local swimmers sloshed and rode the new attraction as actress Kirsten Storms, formerly of "Days of Our Lives," emceed.

Walt Disney World guests find themselves immersed in a dense tropical jungle amid the towering remains -- rusted-out and dilapidated -- of a fruit exporting plant. The once-landlocked packing plant known as Tropical Amity now sits on the shores of Hideaway Bay, a body of water left in the wake of a torrential storm.

The wobbly remains of the wash facility -- what used to be a controlled environment with fruit flowing gently down to the packing plant -- is now a turbulent series of gushing water flumes. It is these flumes, spiraling out of control through twisted and crumbling wash spillways with crushing force, that redefine "flash flooding" for Typhoon Lagoon guests.

While riding Crush 'n' Gusher, guests are whisked away on inflatable rafts and immediately begin to experience the up-and-down sensations of a roller coaster, made possible by utilizing some of today's latest water ride innovations. Powerful water jets propel guests through cavernous twists and turns, eventually spitting them out into the tranquil waters of Hideaway Bay.

"We were so excited about offering this state-of-the-art water ride technology to our guests, that we created three separate ride systems for them to experience," said Patrick Brennan, lead creative designer for Walt Disney Imagineering. "In addition to being the only water coaster thrill ride of its kind in Central Florida, Crush 'n' Gusher is the first-ever water coaster attraction in North America to offer guests three different ride experiences at one location."

"Crush 'n' Gusher is a great addition to Disney's Typhoon Lagoon," said Reggie Williams, vice president of Disney's Wide World of Sports and Water Parks. "With the thrills and excitement that this water coaster ride offers, Crush 'n' Gusher is like having our very own E-Ticket attraction."

Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, itself the result of a calamity of nature (so the legend goes), continues to make the best of a bad situation -- in this case the uncovered structural remains of Tropical Amity. With the newly discovered water coaster thrill ride of Crush 'n' Gusher in the backyard jungle of Typhoon Lagoon, guests have one more reason to enjoy this tropical paradise.
