The Animal Kingdom opened in April of
1998 to some disapproval, controversy and even debate over whether a
zoo, no matter how nontraditional in design, was worthy of Disney. This
500-acre theme park is the
largest of the Walt Disney World theme parks, however it is not size
alone that sets it apart from the others. Lush landscaping, winding
paths, beautiful gardens, mysterious and exotic architecture and
over 1,000 animals all give guests the sense that you have entered
more than just another theme park. Animal Kingdom is divided into
five individual lands.
The Lands of Animal Kingdom
- Africa - Journey
through the wild savannah on Kilimanjaro Safaris that take you to
the heart of Africa with lions, zebra, giraffes and other
magnificent animals roaming freely.
- Camp Minnie-Mickey
- The site to meet many of the lovable Disney characters,
including Mickey Mouse and friends from classic Disney films.
- DinoLand U.S.A. - the world's
fascination with dinosaurs comes to life with thrill rides like
DINOSAUR; let kids dig, swing and giggle through The Boneyard dig
site and prehistoric playground.
- Discovery Island
- The park hub and home of the towering icon, The Tree of
Life. Also: shop for gifts or grab a bite at the food
emporiums.
- Asia - Home
of Expedition Everest, a runaway train adventure; Kali River
Rapids, a white-water raft adventure; Maharajah Jungle Trek, a
walking journey past Asian ruins and live exotic animals; and the
"Flights of Wonder" exotic bird show.

Don't
Miss -
Well, You can't miss it! The Tree of Life serves
as the icon of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Towering above Discovery
Island, the 14-story, 50-foot-wide tree was sculpted by more than a
dozen skilled artisans.
Look closely at The Tree of Life and you’ll
discover more than 325 intricately designed animal carvings - making
it truly a memorable sight! The Tree of Life is also home to the
"It's Tough To Be A Bug!" 3-D adventure. To reach The Tree of Life,
just cross the bridge from the Oasis area near the main entrance to
the theme park.
Ten artists and three Imagineers
worked full-time for 18 months to create the 325 animal carvings on
The Tree of Life. Sculptors had between six and 10 hours to create
the finished image before the plaster hardened.
The Tree of Life is topped with more
than 103,000 transparent, five-shades-of-green leaves that actually
blow in the wind.
Finding
Nemo - The Musical
A half-hour live show, Finding Nemo - The
Musical, is performed four times daily at Disney's Animal Kingdom in
Orlando Florida. The show opened on January 24, 2007.
The show was written by Tony Award-winning
Avenue Q composer Robert Lopez and his wife, Kristen Anderson
Lopez. Tony Award-winning director Peter Brosius signed on to direct
the show, with Michael Curry, who designed puppets for Disney's
successful stage version of The Lion King, serving as leading puppet
and production designer.
Anderson-Lopez said that the couple agreed to
write the adaptation of "one of their favorite movies of all time"
after considering "the idea of people coming in [to see the musical]
at 4, 5 or 6 and saying, 'I want to do that'... So we want to take
it as seriously as we would a Broadway show." To condense the
feature-length film to thirty minutes, she said she and Lopez
focused on a single theme from the movie, the idea that "the world
is dangerous and beautiful."
Several musical numbers take direct inspiration
from lines in the film, including "(In The) Big Blue World," "Fish
Are Friends, Not Food," "Just Keep Swimming," and "Go With the
Flow." In January 2007, a New York studio recording of the show was
released on iTunes, with Lopez and Anderson-Lopez providing the
voices for Marlin and Dory, respectively. Avenue Q star
Stephanie D'Abruzzo also appeared on the recording, as Sheldon/Deb.
